A computer-on-module (COM) is a Single Board computer but one that frequently lacks the standard input/output connectors for peripherals. A COM is usually mounted on a carrier (base plate). The base plate has all the required connectors. Some COMs have a few of their own connectors in which case they can also be used without a base plate.
A COM solution is often used for specific applications that require lower power consumption and where space is limited. This makes COM modules ideal for embedded systems. Because a base plate (carrier board) is often used they remain very flexible when it comes to making customer specific solutions. It is also often possible when developing software to make use of a standard base plate from which hardware and software development can take place in parallel. This allows for a fast time-to-market. Arcobel represents a number of leading manufacturers offering a full range of COM modules.
